One of the common questions that people have in regard to assisted living is how long it should take someone to adjust to living in this new environment. Every person is different so if you base your expectations on others’ experiences, then you will find it difficult to come up with a reasonable answer.
There are a number of variables that need to be taken into account with regard to an assisted living facility and someone moving in for the first time. The first thing to consider is the enthusiasm of the new resident.
If you are talking about an elderly parent whom you convinced to move into assisted living, making them a reluctant participant at this point, they are more likely to enter this process with more resistance and a negative outlook.
As a result, they may decide to spend more time alone in their room. The more time that someone spends alone in the room, the longer it is going to take them to adjust properly to this new living arrangement.
Another factor could be the resident’s health. If a resident is dealing with a lot of health issues, they may not feel comfortable getting around the facility. This would make it more difficult for them to meet other people and take part in a variety of activities.
How can you help your elderly loved one adjust to assisted living more quickly?
One of the best things to consider is patience. You need to make sure that you are patient with your elderly loved one. Just because they may not be adjusting to this new assisted living facility as quickly as you believe they should, that doesn’t mean they will never adjust to it.
Listen to the things that he or she has to say. They may be telling you, in not so many words, what they don’t find comfortable about this new living situation. It may be a simple matter of shyness and you or the staff at the facility could help.
If you live close enough to your loved one, visit them more often than you might have originally planned to. Encourage them to eat in the restaurant or other dining facility. Also have them show you around and visit the common areas where they might meet and make new friends.
Just because it takes a bit longer for someone to adjust to assisted living doesn’t mean it’s the wrong choice. More often than not, it is the right choice for many wonderful reasons.
